Scotus Day Event
At the death of St. Francis, Br. Elias announces the miracle of the wounds of Christ (stigmata) revealed on the body of Francis of Assisi.
This miracle is further revealed by writers and artists, who attempt to capture the moment of the Stigmata. We will focus our thoughts on two versions of the Stigmata: that of Br. Leo and that of St. Bonaventure as painted by Berlinghieri and Giotto. The Invention of the Stigmata

“Remembering and celebrating Francis being touched by the crucified One inspires us to come out of ourselves an d go forth “touching Christ’s suffering flesh in others” (Gaudete et exsultate 37) at the same time, we allow ourselves to be touched and challenged by the dramatic instances of pain and suffering we see afflicting so many of our brothers and sisters around the world.”

“As a result of this vision (of the voice from the San Damiano crucifix), Francis’s heart ached, as if wounded, at the memory of the Lord's Passion. As long as he lived, he always had the stigmata of Jesus in his heart, which was manifested admirably later when the wounds of the Crucified One were visibly reproduced in his body.”

“Remembering and celebrating St. Francis, who was affected by the crucifix, should affect and challenge us through the many dramatic instances of pain and suffering we encounter among the many people in our daily lives. Closeness to the poor combined with contemplation of the Crucified will undoubtedly lead us to the place where we can truly and serenely contemplate our own wounds and heal them effectively.”
